Marquette men’s basketball team’s reaction to earning No. 7 seed
Here is the Marquette men’s basketball team’s reaction on Selection Sunday after learning it will play New Mexico in the first round of the NCAA tournament
For the first time in two years, the Marquette men’s basketball team is losing a player to the NCAA transfer portal.
Al Amadou, a 6-foot-9 forward who redshirted this season after appearing in 14 games as a freshman, entered his name into the portal Thursday.
MU hadn’t seen a player transfer out since after the 2022-23 season, when Emarion Ellis, Keeyan Itejere and Zach Wrightsil entered the portal.
Amadou was a project in the Golden Eagles’ 2023 recruiting class who has exceptional athletic skills, but he has needed time to develop because he was a latecomer to basketball. He had eight field goals as a freshman in the 2023-24 season, with seven of them coming on dunks.
In that way, Amadou was like Itejere, who redshirted his first season and then scored only on five dunks in limited minutes before transferring to Northern Kentucky.
Amadou wasn’t going to be part of the rotation this season, so it was announced in November that he would redshirt. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
The departure leaves MU with two open scholarships for next season.
