A scandal has erupted in Kyiv over graffiti depicting the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak.
The artwork appeared in one of the capital’s parks but did not last long. By the evening of January 26, photos surfaced online showing that the image had been painted over with white paint. However, the job was done rather carelessly, so certain outlines still allow one to recognize what was originally depicted.
But who was behind the creation of this mural?
As it turned out, the initiator of the graffiti was Odesa businessman Yuriy Degas. He is known for his active involvement and influence in the cultural and political spheres. According to available information, it was Degas who financed the creation of the mural, which, however, did not last long.
In addition to his proactive stance, Degas is also known for establishing Ukraine’s only inclusive beach in Odesa in June 2021. His initiatives have repeatedly attracted public attention, and the Yermak graffiti became another example of his activities.
The reasons for the quick removal of the graffiti remain unclear. However, the fact that it was painted over sparked significant public outcry, as the practice of “cleansing” street art in Kyiv has repeatedly been a topic of discussion. This incident only reinforced the notion that Andriy Yermak remains a highly sensitive topic in Ukrainian politics.
The question remains: will there be an attempt to restore the graffiti, or will it appear elsewhere?
